Acrylic Boat Windows, Hatches, & Washboards

We can cut, form, profile and drill virtually any size and shape of cast Acrylic (Perspex)in a variety of tints and thicknesses.

Please note that we also offer a heat-forming service required for Acrylic windows or hatches that are MOULDED to a tight radius.

Before starting production of your window, we will fully discuss your requirements with you to advise of any other considerations or improvements that may be helpful.

We can make a window from either your old windows or a paper template and offer a range of finishes to the edges to suit your boat.

Acrylic Boat Washboards

Project plastics can make 1, 2 and 3 section acrylic washboards to any size in colour tints and a range of thickness . We can also drill and CNC washboards for your supplied locks and latches.

Acrylic washboards main advantages over traditional wooden ones:

1. When not required a multi section washboard is easier to handle and to stow away
2. Acrylic does not rot and Acrylic is maintenance free
3. 10mm, 12mm and 15mm tint Acrylic is very strong and offers a good degree of security
4. Acrylic washboards allow light into your cabin but also offer a degree of privacy if a tinted colour is chosen.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate (Makrolon,Lexan) is a treated glazing material that is virtually unbreakable and it is therefore suitable for applications where there is a risk of damage through impact. Unfortunately, Polycarbonate is easier to scratch than Acrylic with no chance of polishing out scratches or marks

HOW TO CARE FOR PERSPEX (Important: Perspex is prone to crazing if misused)

  • Do not use countersunk screws, the wedge is pulled up tight putting the material under great stress, eventually the Perspex will crack.

  • To minimise stress on the Perspex if the hull/superstructure is to be curved use the thinnest practical sheet as the Perspex is put under great strain as it is pulled out. If it is a very tight curve it is advisable to have the windows formed to the correct curvature, thus preventing crazing which sometimes happens when the material is greatly stressed.

  • To minimise the likely hood of chipping regrind your drill (if you have grinding facilities) to zero rake so that it "scrapes through" rather than cutting, as a chip provides a point for "crack propagation", which will take place very quickly when bolted up.

  • Do not over tighten screws/bolts.

  • To avoid scratching the surface of your windows do not wipe when dry, keep your windows clean with warm soapy water.
